Legislative Update:
April 23

It’s Day 66 of this 90-day session and I will be honest with you, the session has been rough. Senators are spending the very little time they have remaining dismissing the voices of Nebraskans and working to overturn the votes of the people. Just last night, 33 senators voted to advance LB 89, an unnecessary and discriminatory bill that does nothing to expand protections for women or make any improvement in our lives. There are still two more rounds of debate and we have an opportunity to stop this bill. Join the chorus of others advocating for inclusive policies by contacting senators now to oppose LB 89.

In times like these I am reminded that the only way forward is in community. Here are some upcoming opportunities to share space with others and strengthen our collective voices:

  • This Thursday, April 24, is The People’s Day at the Capitol. More information is below.

Together, we can do this. I know that because we’ve done it before. Let’s keep moving forward with our mission clear and our voices strong to create the communities we want to live in. If there is anything I can help you with, please email me.

ADDITIONAL ACTIONS TO TAKE THIS WEEK

The bills working to overturn voter-approved ballot initiatives could be scheduled for second round debate at any time. To ensure all workers are able to earn and use paid sick leave, contact your senator to oppose LB 415. Bonus action: sign the petition to demand the legislature honor the will of voters.

We also expect LB 258 to come up for debate again soon. This bill would create a sub-minimum wage for workers under 20. Passing by just one vote during the first round, please keep contacting senators to oppose LB 258.

THE PEOPLE’S DAY — APRIL 24

Join us tomorrow, April 24 at the Nebraska Capitol for The People’s Day. Drop in anytime between 10 am and 7 pm CT to be the face of the real people impacted by policy decisions. Volunteers from civic organizations will be there to help walk with you as you talk to Senators, visit their offices, and speak up for you and your community. Whether it’s 30 minutes or all day, please join us for what works for your schedule. No matter how long or when, our legislators need to see the people in the people’s house. Let’s remind them that we are here, we are paying attention, and we care.

The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Nebraska in collaboration with other Nebraska organizations. Registration is not required but greatly appreciated. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Rachel Gibson at rachel@lwvnebraska.org.

When our leaders won’t lead, the people will.
