In November 2024, nearly 75% of Nebraska voters supported a ballot initiative to approve paid sick leave for workers. Now, members of the Nebraska Legislature are looking to overturn the will of voters and exempt certain workers in Nebraska from being able to earn and use paid sick leave.
❌ LB 698, introduced by Senator Paul Strommen, would exempt several groups of workers from receiving earned sick leave, including agricultural workers, seasonal and temporary employees, and workers under the age of 16. Additionally, LB 698 would exempt businesses with 10 or fewer employees from having to provide paid sick leave. This bill also removes important protections for workers who face retaliation from their employers for using paid sick leave.
Together, with our Paid Sick Leave for Nebraskans coalition partners, we are calling on Nebraskans to tell lawmakers to respect your vote.
- Action One: Contact all members of the Business and Labor Committee by Monday, February 3 to oppose LB 698.
- Action Two: You can also submit an online comment in opposition to LB 698 by 8 am on Monday to have your testimony included as part of the record.
Paid sick leave was approved in 89 of 93 counties and majority support in every legislative district. No matter how you look at the numbers, voters overwhelmingly support allowing hardworking Nebraskans the ability to earn and use paid sick leave.
No Nebraskan should have to choose between a paycheck and the health of their families. Lawmakers should respect voters and ensure every worker can earn and use paid sick days. Contact your senator today to oppose LB 698!
