What is the quintessential American Dream? Certainly to own a
home, and to make a good living. But for many, it is also to own a business.
The entrepreneurial spirit has always been strong in this
country and you can't pick up a newspaper today without reading about someone's
business success. Starting and owning a business is even sometimes glamorized
in the media, as is the case with companies such as Google, Apple, Inc. and
Facebook.

1960s and '70s, the franchise industry was rapidly expanding - so much so that
